Checked bag allowances

Changes to bag allowances and fees have been updated as of May 18, 2026.

Travel within / between the U.S., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, Caribbean (except Cuba / Haiti), Mexico, Central America (except Panama) and Guyana – 1st checked bag fee is $50 ($45 if you pay online) and the 2nd checked bag fee is $60 ($55 if you pay online). Pay $5 more for 1st and 2nd checked bag fees for Basic Economy tickets.

Checked bag fees are charged per person and each direction of travel. If you pay for checked bags and later buy or receive an upgrade that includes free checked bags, any bag fees you already paid will not be refunded.

Checked bag fees paid at the airport are non-refundable. If you believe you were charged incorrectly, you can request a refund online.

How many bags can you take?

Check up to 10 bags on American Airlines operated flights if your trip is:

  • Domestic
  • Trans-Atlantic
  • Trans-Pacific

Check up to 5 bags on American-operated flights if you’re traveling to / through / from:

  • Mexico / Caribbean / Central America*
  • South America*
  • Brazil*

*There are seasonal and year-round bag restrictions

Cuba

Each passenger traveling to Cuba may only check up to 2 bags* with a maximum weight of 70 lbs / 32 kgs per bag, plus 1 carry-on bag and 1 personal item.

*Seasonal exceptions apply to Havana, Cuba. For tickets issued on or after August 26, 2025, for travel on or after October 1, 2025, customers with AAdvantage Executive Platinum® status, AAdvantage Platinum Pro® status, or oneworld® Emerald status are limited to no more than 2 free bags when traveling to or from Cuba.
